To salute the exit from service of an airplane that, in the words of CEO Ed Bastian, helped transform Delta into a global airline, we are republishing the latest — and now sadly last — review of a flight on a Delta 777. Europe is primarily served by Delta with Airbus A330 and Boeing 767 aircraft. American’s flagship 777-300ER sports 52 business-class seats, in addition to 8 in the first-class cabin, while United’s 777-300ER offers a whopping 60 Polaris seats, spread between two large cabins. When TPG and I flew on the inaugural A350 flight, the LSTN headphones were a fairly new addition for the airline, and they had some issues. Delta’s well-regarded Delta One Suite translates well to the Boeing 777. I have, however, been lucky enough to experience the Delta One Suite twice since the product was launched in late 2017: The first time on one of the first flights of the first 777s to receive the suites, and then this flight, a little over a year later, also on a 777, thanks to a great redemption. The hard product is great, and having the sliding door at each suite sets it apart from its domestic competition. Fortunately, Delta has confirmed that the suite will be installed on its 777-200s. The back room was less crowded and had plenty of seats, and, just as importantly, outlets for passengers waiting for a flight. Delta’s well-regarded Delta One Suite translates well to the Boeing 777. With sky-high Skymiles prices for business class, I hate to think what DL might charge for an award in first class. As an unashamed, hamster-wheel-addicted Delta Diamond Medallion, I’ve gotten to fly up front several times on the airline’s long-haul fleet, and the crown jewel of those airplanes is the Delta One Suite, which can be found in the airline’s Airbus A350s, A330-900neos, and Boeing 777s. I picked the pan-seared chicken, and it did not disappoint. I got a great crew on this flight. I arrived at DTW’s A concourse and made my way to the SkyClub in the center of the concourse, a lounge I’ve visited many times. Since I fly Delta often, I became used to selecting an odd-numbered seat if I happened to be flying in a premium cabin because — at least on the 767 and A350 — the odd seats are directly adjacent to the window, which means that you’re more protected from the activity going on in the aisle. While it’s rare that you’ll find reasonable redemption rates for routes like these, we have seen flights between some of Delta’s hubs and Asia for as little as 85,000 SkyMiles one-way. Of course, I cozied up by the windows so I could take in the views of the gate area, which were pretty awesome. Los Angeles is a major hub for Delta, and it’s clear the airline’s investing a lot of money and doing a lot of work on its terminals at LAX, but the current state of things is … not great. Delta operates flights from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 at LAX, and my boarding pass indicated that I’d be departing from T2. But I still got a lot of goodies, including a pair of socks, tissues, earplugs, a pen, Kiehl’s lip balm and lotion, a dental kit, hand sanitizer and one of those great Tumi eye masks. The graphics were sharp, and the screen itself was responsive. Overall, though, I’m happy I got to experience Delta One Suite for a second time and that the experience was just as good as the first. The seat controls are intuitive and located on a touch panel adjacent to the seat. The divider between the two center seats can be lowered.
